Stephen Kingwas born in Portland Maine in 1947. He was raised by his mother. After high school, he went to college at the University of Maine at Orono and graduated with a B.A. in English. He met his wife, Tabitha in the library at the university. He had trouble getting a job right away so he sold some short stories to magazines. His first short story sale that went big was "Startling Mystery Stories". He became a high school teacher but continued writing in his free time. His first novel "Carrie" was accepted and published in 1973.
